Insights
Protein losing enteropathy may manifest as immunodeficiency. A rare lymphoenteric fistula was identified as a cause, diagnosed using combined single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography lymphoscintigraphy.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Immunology
- Radiology
Background:
- Protein losing enteropathy (PLE) is a condition characterized by excessive loss of serum proteins into the gastrointestinal tract.
- PLE can present with diverse clinical manifestations, including immunodeficiency.
- Rare etiologies of PLE require advanced diagnostic approaches.
Abstract:
Protein losing enteropathy can present as an immunodeficiency. This report describes a rare cause of protein losing enteropathy due to a lymphoenteric fistula and how a novel use of a pre-existing combined imaging technique of single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography lymphoscintigraphy helped in making the diagnosis.

Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.

Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...
