Insights
This study uses electron microscopy to detail normal bovine mammary gland cells, including alveolar, myoepithelial, and immune cells, aiding in milk cell identification.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Anatomy
- Cell Biology
- Histology
Context:
- The bovine mammary gland is crucial for dairy production.
- Understanding its cellular composition is vital for animal health and milk quality.
- Previous research has not comprehensively detailed all cell types via electron microscopy.
Purpose:
- To provide a detailed ultrastructural description of all normal bovine mammary gland cell types.
- To differentiate between various cell morphologies within the gland and milk.
- To establish a baseline for identifying cells present in bovine milk.
Summary:
- Electron microscopy was employed to investigate the ultrastructure of normal bovine mammary gland cells.
- Key cell types examined include alveolar epithelial cells, myoepithelial cells, lymphocytes, fibroblasts, fibrocytes, mast cells, and macrophages.
- Distinct morphological features differentiating these cells were highlighted.
Impact:
- This research enhances the understanding of mammary gland histology and cytology in cattle.
- Provides a foundation for identifying cellular components in milk, potentially impacting diagnostics and quality control.
- Contributes valuable ultrastructural data for comparative cell biology studies.
Abstract:
In this study all cells of the normal bovine mammary gland are described by means of electron microscopic investigations. The ultrastructural features and differences of the alveolar cells of the mammary ducts, the myoepithelial cells, the lymphocytes, the fibroblasts, the fibrocytes, the mast cells, and the macrophages are emphasized. The paper aims to identify the various cells in the milk.
