Summary

TT virus (TTV) DNA was detected in Brazilian patients with chronic liver disease. This DNA virus was found in 20% of cases in São Paulo and 45% in Pará, indicating its presence in Brazil.

Background:

  • TT virus (TTV) is a recently identified DNA virus.
  • TTV was initially discovered in a post-transfusion hepatitis case of unknown origin.
  • The prevalence and genetic diversity of TTV in Brazil remain largely uncharacterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and genotypes of TTV in patients with chronic liver diseases in Brazil.
  • To compare TTV prevalence in two distinct geographical regions of Brazil: São Paulo (Southeast) and Pará (North).

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of TTV DNA in serum samples from chronic liver disease patients.
  • Detection of TTV DNA using molecular methods.
  • DNA sequencing to identify TTV genotypes.

  • TTV DNA was detected in 21 out of 105 patients (20%) in São Paulo.
