    Summary

    Enflurane anesthesia, unlike other agents, decreases cerebral blood flow in patients with cerebrovascular lesions. This study observed an average 8.4% reduction with 1% enflurane and a further 8.5% decrease with 2% enflurane.

    Background:

    • Cerebrovascular lesions can impair cerebral blood flow regulation.
    • Most inhalational anesthetics increase cerebral blood flow.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of enflurane anesthesia on cerebral blood flow in patients with cerebrovascular lesions.
    • To compare the effects of N2O-enflurane and N2O-fentanyl anesthesia on cerebral blood flow.

    Main Methods:

    • Cerebral blood flow was measured in 11 patients with cerebrovascular lesions.
    • Measurements were taken under controlled ventilation and stable PaCO2.
    • Anesthesia was induced using N2O-fentanyl, N2O-enflurane 1%, and in some cases, N2O-enflurane 2%.
