Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is a new therapeutic technology that has received instant and widespread acceptance. The history and technical aspects of the procedure are presented, but most importantly, the authors discuss radiology's role and note the importance of management's awareness of the potential impact on departmental fiscal, equipment and personnel resources.
