Abstract:
Director of Health and Medical Systems at a major teaching hospital and a medical educator himself, the author maintains that the current medical education system is producing physicians who are "societal and professional misfits." He sets forth a remedial action plan that stresses the interrelationships of medicine and other disciplines; quality assurance; utilization review; risk management; patient relations training; and cost containment. And he suggests that embracing, rather than avoiding, these concerns is the key to better quality of care and reduced costs.
