Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) is typically vision-sparing, but linked systemic diseases significantly impact health. Early detection and treatment of these underlying conditions can improve patient outcomes and longevity.

- Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) is often considered benign for vision.
- However, BRAO is frequently associated with serious systemic conditions.
Observation:
- Patients with retinal artery occlusion commonly present with hypertension (59%), atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (21%), diabetes mellitus (15%–21%), valvular heart disease (5%), and cerebrovascular accidents (5%).
Findings:
- These systemic diseases significantly reduce life expectancy.
- Many of these conditions are treatable.
Implications:
- Comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation, including carotid duplex ultrasonography, is crucial for identifying occult systemic diseases.
- Prompt treatment of identified systemic conditions can reduce the risk of future arterial occlusive events, improving patient survival and quality of life.
