Special considerations for medication use in children with developmental disabilities
1Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg Children's Hospital, Canada.
Insights
Children with developmental disabilities often face similar medical issues. Management requires a team approach, including medication, with careful attention to growth, development, and potential drug interactions.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Medicine
- Developmental Pediatrics
- Clinical Pharmacology
Background:
- Children with developmental disabilities may present with a consistent set of associated medical conditions, irrespective of the primary cause.
- Effective management strategies for these children typically involve a multidisciplinary approach.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight the common medical conditions associated with developmental disabilities in children.
- To emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary care and pharmacologic management in this population.
Main Methods:
- Review of common medical conditions and management principles in pediatric developmental disabilities.
- Discussion of interdisciplinary team roles and pharmacologic considerations.
Main Results:
- A shared pattern of associated medical conditions exists across various developmental disabilities.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial for comprehensive care.
- Pharmacologic interventions must carefully consider effects on growth and development, and potential adverse drug reactions.
Conclusions:
- Integrated, multidisciplinary management is essential for children with developmental disabilities.
- Pharmacologic treatments require careful monitoring for developmental impact and drug interactions.
Abstract:
Regardless of the underlying cause of a child's developmental disability, a similar constellation of associated medical conditions may occur. Successful management approaches in children with developmental disabilities are generally interdisciplinary, frequently involving a variety of medical and surgical disciplines, allied health professionals, and the child's family. Pharmacologic intervention is an integral aspect of the management plan, but consideration must be given both to the possible effects of the medications on a child's growth and development, and to the avoidance of adverse drug interactions and reactions.
