Background:

Cataract extraction is a common surgical procedure.
Simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery is an alternative to staged procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the visual outcome and safety of simultaneous bilateral cataract extraction.
To compare complication rates with unilateral cataract surgery.

Main Methods:

Retrospective case review of 259 consecutive patients (518 eyes).
Inclusion of various surgical techniques: bilateral extracapsular, uniocular extracapsular with different IOLs, and bilateral intracapsular.
Outcome measures: best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), complication rates, and conjunctival swab cultures.

Simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery is a safe procedure.
