We developed SCRIPTKELL, a computer tool to measure cognitive effort in writing and other tasks. This system enhances experimental designs for studying complex cognitive activities.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Experimental Psychology
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Background:

  • Measuring cognitive effort in complex tasks like writing is challenging.
  • Existing methods may lack flexibility or ease of use for detailed subprocess analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce SCRIPTKELL, a novel computer-assisted experimental tool.
  • Enable precise measurement of time and cognitive effort in writing subprocesses.
  • Facilitate the investigation of complex cognitive activities.

Main Methods:

  • SCRIPTKELL utilizes a modulated version of Kellogg's (1986) triple-task procedure.
  • Combines a primary task (writing/other) with reaction time and directed retrospection tasks.
  • Designed for ease of use and modulation of experimental parameters.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Demonstrates the utility of SCRIPTKELL for novel empirical and theoretical research.
  • Highlights the tool's capability to quantify cognitive resource allocation.
  • Shows potential for detailed analysis of writing and other cognitive subprocesses.

Conclusions:

  • SCRIPTKELL offers a flexible platform for experimental design.
  • Facilitates in-depth investigation into the functional characteristics of complex cognition.
  • A valuable tool for researchers in cognitive science and psychology.
