Summary

Diagnosed mycoses in Mexico City shifted significantly, with opportunistic infections rising and etiological agents changing. Superficial mycoses remain common, but mortality from rhinocerebral mucormycosis has drastically decreased.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases Epidemiology

Context:

  • A retrospective analysis of mycoses diagnoses in a Mexico City hospital.
  • Comparison of two distinct time periods: 1967-1977 and 1993-1997.
  • Involved a significant patient cohort (15,429 and 5,998, respectively).

Purpose:

  • To evaluate changes in the frequency and types of diagnosed mycoses.
  • To identify shifts in etiological agents causing fungal infections.
  • To assess changes in clinical outcomes, including mortality rates.

Summary:

  • Superficial mycoses remained the most frequent diagnosis in both periods.
  • A notable increase in opportunistic fungal infections was observed in the later period.
  • Significant changes in causative agents were documented, including a rise in *T. rubrum* and the identification of new *Cryptococcus* species.

  • Impact:

    • Highlights evolving trends in fungal infections within an urban hospital setting.
    • Provides insights into the changing landscape of mycology, particularly concerning opportunistic pathogens.
    • Demonstrates improvements in managing severe mycoses like rhinocerebral mucormycosis.
