Summary

Carbamide peroxide toothpaste better stabilized teeth whitening effects compared to hydrogen peroxide toothpaste over three months. Hydrogen peroxide toothpaste resulted in less tooth sensitivity.

Background:

  • Professional teeth bleaching is a common cosmetic dental procedure.
  • Maintaining the results of tooth whitening and managing post-operative sensitivity are key patient concerns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of two toothpastes containing different peroxide agents in maintaining tooth color after bleaching.
  • To assess tooth sensitivity associated with each toothpaste formulation.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty patients who underwent bleaching were randomized to use either a 10% carbamide peroxide (DW) or a 3% hydrogen peroxide (HP) toothpaste for 12 weeks.
  • Tooth color was evaluated using a shade guide and colorimeter at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks.
  • Tooth sensitivity was self-reported by patients.
