Assessment of Matrix Band Systems in Restoring Proximal Caries of Primary Molars

Aim And Objectives:
To evaluate and compare three different matrix band systems in restoring proximal caries of primary molar teeth.
Materials And Methods:
Ninety primary molar teeth with proximal caries from 54 children aged 4-7 years were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to one of the three groups (group I-Fendermate, group II-T-band, group III-Composi-Tight 3D Fusion Ring). Intraoral examination and preoperative radiographic assessment were done. The prepared cavity was restored with glass ionomer cement with the matrix system in place. Postoperative radiographs were taken. Clinical and radiographic evaluation was carried out to compare the performance of the three matrix systems. Statistical analysis was carried out using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 and the Chi-squared test. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results:
Fendermate and Composi-Tight 3D Fusion Ring were significantly superior to T-band in the establishment of proximal contact, with no significant difference in all other parameters among the three matrix systems.All three tested matrix systems were equally suitable for the restoration of proximal caries for the parameters assessed, except for the establishment of proximal contact, where Fendermate and Composi-Tight were significantly superior to the T-band system (p = 0.028, p = 0.001).
Conclusion:
Composi-Tight 3D Fusion Ring was better in terms of adaptation of the matrix, patient cooperation, separation of the tooth during restorative procedures, and restoration of the natural anatomic tooth form.The appropriate adaptation of matrix systems helps in the establishment of successful proximal restorations.
