Long-term intracavernous prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) treatment for erectile dysfunction showed no significant histological changes in penile smooth muscle. This study found PGE1 does not appear to alter intracavernous structures after extensive use.

- A reduction in smooth muscle percentage was observed in 2 of 5 patients on the injection side.
- No differences were noted in the contralateral corpus cavernosum or in patients biopsied only post-treatment.
Conclusions:
- Intracavernous prostaglandin E1 treatment does not appear to cause significant long-term histological alterations to penile smooth muscle structures.
