Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.
  • Dopamine agonists are commonly prescribed for Parkinson's disease symptom management.

Observation:

  • Two Parkinson's disease patients experienced sudden sleep attacks during treatment.
  • The patients were treated with ropinirole and/or pramipexole, both non-ergot dopamine agonists.

Findings:

  • Sleep attacks may represent a class effect of non-ergot dopamine agonists.
  • This adverse event is potentially life-threatening.

Implications:

  • Healthcare professionals must be aware of this risk.
  • Patients should be cautioned about the potential for sleep attacks when using these medications.
