Summary

Two patients spontaneously passed silicate stones, confirmed by infrared spectrophotometry. This study reviews 30 previously reported Japanese cases of silicate calculi.

Background:

  • Silicate calculi are rare urinary tract stones.

Observation:

  • Two patients, aged 53 and 55, presented with spontaneous passage of urinary stones.
  • Infrared spectrophotometry analysis revealed the stones were primarily composed of silicate.

Findings:

  • The patients had no known history of ingesting magnesium silicate, a potential source of silicate.
  • A review of 30 previously reported cases of silicate calculi in Japanese literature was conducted.

Implications:

  • This case series contributes to the limited literature on silicate urolithiasis.
  • Further research may elucidate the etiology and optimal management of silicate stones.
