Hypermobility is linked to both fibromyalgia and breast implants, but fibromyalgia and breast implants are not directly associated. This study investigated these connections in 2,500 women.

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain disorder.
  • Hypermobility, a condition involving excessive joint flexibility, is common in some rheumatic diseases.
  • Breast implants are widely used cosmetic and reconstructive devices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential associations between fibromyalgia (FM), hypermobility, and breast implants.
  • To determine if breast implantation precedes or is associated with the development of FM.
  • To explore the independent relationships among these three conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 2,500 female patients' medical records (ages 25-65) in a rheumatology practice.
  • Comparison of patients meeting FM criteria versus those who did not.

  • Statistical analysis including univariate and multivariate regression, adjusting for age, income, and other rheumatic conditions.
  • Main Results:

    • Hypermobility showed a significant association with fibromyalgia (adjusted OR 2.20).
    • Hypermobility was also significantly associated with breast implantation (adjusted OR 1.80).
    • No significant association was found between breast implantation and subsequent development of fibromyalgia (adjusted OR 0.74).

    Conclusions:

    • Hypermobility is independently associated with both fibromyalgia and breast implantation.
    • There is no independent association found between breast implantation and fibromyalgia.
    • These findings suggest hypermobility as a potential shared factor or confounder in studies examining FM and breast implants.
