Childhood third ventricle meningiomas are rare. This case highlights successful surgical removal of a transitional meningioma in a child, leading to an uneventful recovery without the need for a permanent shunt.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Neurosurgery
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Neuropathology

Background:

  • Meningiomas are uncommon in children, with third ventricle locations being exceptionally rare.
  • Only 16 cases of third ventricle meningiomas in pediatric patients have been previously reported in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A 5-year-old girl presented with headache and bilateral papilledema, indicative of increased intracranial pressure.
  • Imaging revealed a large mass in the third ventricle causing hydrocephalus.

Findings:

  • The tumor, attached to the choroid plexus, was completely removed via a transcallosal interfornical approach.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a transitional meningioma.
  • The patient experienced an uneventful recovery, avoiding the need for a permanent cerebrospinal fluid shunt.

Implications:

  • CT and MRI are valuable for diagnosing third ventricle meningiomas and planning surgical interventions.
  • Complete surgical excision is the primary curative treatment for these rare pediatric tumors.
  • This case contributes to the limited literature on pediatric third ventricle meningiomas, emphasizing successful surgical outcomes.
