Summary

Topical hydroquinone and tretinoin creams, used for skin conditions, can cause fingernail discoloration. This side effect resolved after discontinuing the application of these dermatological treatments.

Background:

  • A 33-year-old male patient applied 4% hydroquinone and 0.1% tretinoin creams to his face intermittently for nine months.
  • The patient subsequently developed brown discoloration of his fingernails.

Findings:

  • The fingernail discoloration was attributed to the topical application of hydroquinone and tretinoin.
  • Cessation of the creams led to the complete resolution of the nail discoloration.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential, albeit reversible, side effect of combined topical hydroquinone and tretinoin therapy.
  • Awareness of this adverse effect is important for clinicians prescribing these common dermatological treatments.
