Short-term anabolic androgenic steroid use alters brain chemistry, increasing 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and decreasing 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) in cerebrospinal fluid. These neurochemical changes correlate with observed behavioral alterations.
