Summary

Porcelain gallbladder (PG) management is debated due to historical cancer links. This study found no gallbladder cancer in 15 PG patients, nor calcification in 88 gallbladder cancers, questioning current surgical guidelines.

Background:

  • Historical studies (1931, 1962) suggested a link between porcelain gallbladder (PG) and gallbladder carcinoma.
  • Current surgical management of PG is largely based on these older findings.
  • The actual risk of malignancy in PG remains a subject of clinical debate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate patient characteristics associated with porcelain gallbladder.
  • To assess the contemporary risk of gallbladder carcinoma in patients with PG.
  • To compare findings with historical data and inform clinical management.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 10,741 cholecystectomy records (1955-1998).
  • Pathological evaluation of gallbladder specimens for calcification and malignancy.

    • Findings suggest a potential need to revise current surgical management strategies for porcelain gallbladder.
