Summary

Partial nephrectomy is effective for small renal cell carcinoma, offering good outcomes in selected low-stage patients. This kidney-sparing surgery demonstrated positive results in a small cohort.

Context:

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) management.
Partial nephrectomy as a kidney-sparing surgical option.

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of partial nephrectomy for small renal cell carcinoma.

Summary:

A retrospective study of 7 patients with small renal cell carcinoma (pT1a/pT1b) who underwent partial nephrectomy between 1991 and 1999.
Indications included imperative (3 patients) and elective (4 patients) cases.
Mean tumor size was 2.7 cm, with a mean renal artery clamping time of 22 minutes and mean blood loss of 400 ml.
Postoperative follow-up averaged 43 months. Six of seven patients remained alive and recurrence-free.

Impact:

Partial nephrectomy is an effective treatment for select patients with small renal cell carcinoma.
