Acquired nonaccommodative esotropia (ANAET) is more common in children than congenital esotropia. This form of childhood strabismus, often starting between ages 1-5, rarely links to underlying diseases and shows good surgical outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Strabismus Research

Background:

  • Acquired nonaccommodative esotropia (ANAET) in children is infrequently reported.
  • ANAET is often associated with neurologic or neoplastic disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of ANAET in a pediatric cohort.
  • To describe the clinical characteristics of childhood ANAET.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective identification of children (<11 years) with esotropia in a rural Appalachian region (1995-1998).
  • Review of age at onset, family history, medical history, ophthalmologic findings, and surgical outcomes for ANAET patients.

Main Results:

  • ANAET diagnosed in 10.4% of children with esotropia, higher than congenital esotropia (5.4%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Median onset age for ANAET was 31.4 months; mean initial deviation was 24 PD.
  • Surgical correction achieved orthotropia (≤8 PD) in 13/14 patients, with 12 demonstrating stereopsis.
  • Conclusions:

    • ANAET is more prevalent than congenital esotropia in this cohort.
    • Childhood ANAET typically starts between 1-5 years and is infrequently linked to underlying conditions.
    • Early surgical intervention for ANAET improves chances of bifoveal fixation compared to congenital esotropia.
