Insights

Coxsackie B virus IgM antibodies were detected in 69.6% of myocarditis patients, significantly higher than controls. Coxsackie B3 was the most prevalent type, indicating Cox B viruses are key causes of viral myocarditis.

Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Immunology
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, often caused by viral infections.
  • Coxsackie B viruses are known etiological agents of viral myocarditis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To detect Coxsackie B virus type 1-6 IgM antibodies in patients with clinically diagnosed myocarditis.
  • To evaluate the prevalence of Coxsackie B virus IgM antibodies in myocarditis cases compared to a control group.

Main Methods:

  • Capture IgM ELISA (Mac ELISA) was employed for antibody detection.
  • 193 clinically diagnosed myocarditis cases and 181 non-myocarditis controls were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • A total of 69.6% of myocarditis patients tested positive for Coxsackie B virus IgM antibodies.
  • Coxsackie B3 was the most frequently detected type (40% of positive cases), followed by Cox B2, Cox B4, Cox B1, Cox B5, and Cox B6.
  • The positive rate of Cox B virus IgM antibody in myocarditis patients was significantly higher than in the control group (P <0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Coxsackie B viruses are likely the primary agents responsible for viral myocarditis in the Beijing population studied.
  • Mac ELISA is an effective, rapid, specific, and sensitive method for early diagnosis of myocarditis by detecting Cox B virus IgM antibodies.
