Background:

  • Blunt chest trauma from motor vehicle accidents can cause cardiac injuries.
  • Tricuspid regurgitation, if initially asymptomatic, may progress to overt right ventricular failure years later.

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old male sustained head-on collision trauma, treated for injuries with residual mild tricuspid regurgitation.
  • Five years post-trauma, the patient presented with severe right ventricular failure due to progressive tricuspid valve regurgitation.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention included multiple failed papillary muscle and chordal repair attempts.
  • A 33-mm SJM Biocor valve replacement was ultimately performed due to the severity of regurgitation.
