Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Adjustable suture strabismus surgery boasts high success rates (90-94%).
  • Post-operative deviations can occur within the first week, necessitating intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a method for early reoperation of adjustable strabismus surgery.
  • To address undesirable deviations within the first week post-initial repair.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 7 patients undergoing reoperation within the first week.
  • Patients had overcorrected vertical deviations and experienced diplopia reversal.

Main Results:

  • All patients were successfully treated, achieving orthophoria or small phoric deviations.
  • Diplopia was eliminated in all cases post-reoperation.

Related Experiment Videos

Conclusions:

  • Early identification and reoperation of overcorrected adjustable strabismus sutures are feasible.
  • Outpatient reoperation in the first week prevents repeat anesthesia and operating room use.
