Summary

Alstrom syndrome (AS) patients may exhibit unique oral health issues, including gingivitis and discolored enamel bands on anterior teeth. Histological analysis revealed abnormalities in the gingiva, offering new insights into AS manifestations.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Genetics
  • Oral Pathology

Background:

  • Alstrom syndrome (AS) is a rare genetic disorder with multisystemic effects including obesity, vision loss, diabetes, and hearing loss.
  • Previous research has not detailed the oral manifestations associated with Alstrom syndrome.
  • This study investigates the oral findings in two patients diagnosed with Alstrom syndrome.

Observation:

  • Both Alstrom syndrome cases presented with gingivitis.
  • Light yellow-brown discolored enamel bands were observed on the anterior teeth of both patients.
  • The observed enamel discoloration may be linked to underlying, subtle band-like enamel hypoplasia.

Findings:

  • Histological examination of gingival tissue revealed irregular basal lamina thickness.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Transmission electron microscopy identified delamination of the myelin sheath in the gingiva.
  • These findings represent the first report of pathological odontogenesis and gingival histological changes in Alstrom syndrome.
  • Implications:

    • The oral findings in this study expand the known clinical spectrum of Alstrom syndrome.
    • Understanding these oral manifestations can aid in comprehensive patient management.
    • This research highlights the need for further investigation into the oral and dental aspects of Alstrom syndrome.
