Summary
The SonoHeart hand-held ultrasound device offers rapid and accurate cardiac diagnosis in outpatient clinics. It shows excellent agreement with standard echocardiography for assessing heart function and dimensions.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Medical Imaging
- Point-of-Care Diagnostics
Background:
- Evaluating the diagnostic utility of the SonoHeart, a portable, battery-powered ultrasound device.
- Assessing its performance in an outpatient cardiology clinic setting.
Observation:
- 114 cardiac patients underwent examination using the SonoHeart and compared to standard echocardiography (SE).
- Evaluated global and regional ventricular function, cardiac chamber dimensions, and identified specific pathologies.
Findings:
- High agreement between SonoHeart and SE for global left ventricular (93%) and right ventricular (99%) function.
- Excellent agreement for regional wall motion (90%), LV dimensions (99%), RV dimensions (99%), left atrium (96%), and right atrium (99%).
- SonoHeart successfully identified hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, pericardial effusion, and valve abnormalities.
Implications:
- The SonoHeart facilitates timely and precise diagnoses at the point of care.
- Enables efficient cardiac assessments in diverse outpatient environments.
- Supports improved patient management through accessible diagnostic technology.
