Summary

Researchers identified a novel skin tumor primarily composed of CD34-expressing spindle cells. This previously undescribed lesion, a CD34-reactive myxoid dermal dendrocytoma, offers new insights into skin cell biology.

Background:

  • Normal skin contains CD34-expressing cells, including spindle cells, vascular endothelial cells, and dendritic cells.
  • CD34 is a cell surface glycoprotein often used as a marker in hematopoiesis and stem cell research.

Observation:

  • A 66-year-old woman presented with a small, dome-shaped skin papule on her palm.
  • Microscopic examination revealed a well-circumscribed polypoid tumor with spindle cells in a myxoid matrix.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis showed strong CD34 reactivity in most tumor cells.
  • The tumor cells were negative for S-100 protein, smooth muscle actin, desmin, and other markers, but positive for vimentin and CD68.
