Area of Science:

  • Nail Dystrophies
  • Medical Genetics
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Pincer nail is a rare nail dystrophy.
  • Characterized by transverse overcurvature increasing distally.
  • Etiology, pathogenesis, and inheritance are unclear.

Observation:

  • Pincer nail of the toes observed in three remotely consanguineous siblings.
  • Two girls and one boy were affected.
  • The family distribution suggests a potential genetic link.

Findings:

  • The case distribution in this family raises the possibility of autosomal-recessive Mendelian inheritance.
  • This finding contributes to understanding the genetic basis of pincer nail.
  • Further research is needed to confirm the inheritance pattern.

Implications:

  • This study provides a potential genetic model for pincer nail.
  • Understanding the inheritance pattern can aid in genetic counseling.
  • Further investigation into the genetic etiology of pincer nail is warranted.
