Subdermal carbon dioxide (CO(2)) laser resurfacing in rats did not alter skin surface area. While it caused significant skin sloughing, this method did not achieve the desired skin contracture effects.

Background:

  • Conventional carbon dioxide (CO(2)) laser resurfacing effectively reverses photoaging.
  • Subdermal CO(2) resurfacing has been proposed to achieve skin contracture similar to epidermal methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate skin surface area contraction following subdermal CO(2) laser resurfacing in a rat model.
  • To assess the efficacy of subdermal CO(2) laser resurfacing for skin tightening.

Main Methods:

  • A nonrandomized control study involved 32 rats divided into three groups based on CO(2) laser strength (5W vs 7W) and resurfacing pattern (cross-hatched vs parallel lines).
  • Subdermal CO(2) laser treatment was applied to experimental flaps, with contralateral flaps serving as controls.
  • Skin area measurements were recorded immediately post-treatment and at 3 weeks.
