Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Bipolar disorder recovery is often incomplete, with persistent neuropsychological impairment during euthymic states.
  • Previous research was confounded by mild affective symptoms in remitted patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize neuropsychological functioning in the euthymic phase of bipolar disorder.
  • Emphasis on executive functioning tasks.

Main Methods:

  • Compared 30 euthymic bipolar I patients with 30 healthy controls.
  • Utilized neuropsychological tasks sensitive to prefrontal cortex function.

Main Results:

  • Bipolar I patients showed impairments in attentional set shifting, verbal memory, and sustained attention.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Sustained attention deficit persisted after controlling for mild affective symptoms.
  • This deficit correlated with illness progression and was present even near illness onset.
  • Conclusions:

    • Sustained attention deficit may be a neuropsychological vulnerability marker for bipolar disorder.
    • This finding offers a focus for understanding the disorder's phenotype and involved neural networks.
