Area of Science:

  • Surgical outcomes
  • Gastroenterology
  • Military medicine

Background:

  • Restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) is a surgical procedure for ulcerative colitis (UC) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).
  • Assessing the long-term functional outcomes and compatibility with military service is crucial for servicemen undergoing RPC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) in United Kingdom (UK) servicemen.
  • To determine if RPC is compatible with the demands of active military service.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of servicemen who underwent RPC for UC or FAP before December 31st, 2000, was identified.
  • Patients were assessed via direct or telephone interviews, recording pouch function, military duties, medical status, and reasons for discharge.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Fifteen servicemen (mean age 30) underwent RPC, with a median follow-up of 74 months.
  • Fourteen patients demonstrated acceptable pouch function; one required pouch excision due to intractable pouchitis.
  • Eight of the fifteen servicemen remained in service, with five performing full duties and three restricted duties.

Conclusions:

  • Restorative proctocolectomy is compatible with military service life.
  • The majority of individuals who undergo RPC are capable of fulfilling active, unrestricted military duties.
