A rare Salmonella typhi infection caused a focal suppurative lymphatic abscess in a child's neck. This first-time reported case highlights a unique presentation of typhoid fever, successfully treated with antibiotics and drainage.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Salmonella typhi is a bacterium primarily causing typhoid fever, a systemic illness.
  • Lymphatic abscesses are localized collections of pus within the lymphatic system.
  • Focal presentations of Salmonella typhi infections are less common than systemic disease.

Observation:

  • An 8-year-old child presented with a submandibular suppurative lymphatic abscess.
  • Repeated isolation of Salmonella typhi from the abscess confirmed the causative agent.
  • No prior literature documented similar focal suppurative typhoidal lymphatic abscesses.

Findings:

  • The case represents the first reported instance of a focal suppurative lymphatic abscess caused by Salmonella typhi.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed through microbiological analysis of abscess fluid.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient showed a positive response to treatment.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known spectrum of Salmonella typhi manifestations.
    • Highlights the importance of considering unusual presentations in pediatric infectious diseases.
    • Suggests that prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment (cephalexin and surgical drainage) are effective for this rare condition.
