Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Genetics
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Turner's syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal condition affecting phenotypic females, characterized by X chromosome abnormalities.
  • Previous literature has linked TS to various ocular diseases, though iridocyclitis is rarely documented.

Observation:

  • This study presents three female patients with Turner's syndrome and uveitis.
  • Two patients were observed during childhood and adolescence, with follow-up averaging 12.6 months.

Findings:

  • All three patients presented with iridocyclitis, a form of anterior uveitis.
  • Complications included papilledema and cystoid macular edema in one case. Two patients had associated autoimmune conditions like psoriasis and juvenile arthritis.
  • The iridocyclitis showed a tendency towards chronicity, potentially influenced by contraindications to systemic steroid use.

Implications:

  • Iridocyclitis should be considered a significant ocular manifestation of Turner's syndrome.
  • Early detection and management are crucial, especially in patients with co-existing autoimmune diseases.
  • Despite chronic inflammation, visual acuity remained good in all reported cases.
