Summary

This study describes canine atrial septal defect (ASD), a heart condition diagnosed using echocardiography. Prognosis for dogs with isolated ASD is good, but worsens with other cardiac issues.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Cardiology
  • Canine Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Congenital Heart Defects

Background:

  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a congenital heart anomaly in dogs.
  • Diagnosis often requires advanced imaging techniques.
  • Understanding associated conditions is crucial for prognosis.

Observation:

  • Five cases of canine ostium secundum type ASD were analyzed.
  • Clinical, electrocardiographic, radiographic, and echocardiographic data were collected.
  • Colour Doppler imaging proved effective for ASD diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Two dogs had ASD with other congenital defects (ventricular septal defect, tricuspid dysplasia).
  • One geriatric dog had ASD with dilated cardiomyopathy and suspected atrial thrombosis.
  • Two dogs presented with isolated ASD.

Implications:

  • Isolated, small ASDs generally have a good long-term prognosis in dogs.
  • Concurrent cardiac conditions significantly compromise the prognosis.
  • Echocardiography, particularly Colour Doppler, is vital for diagnosing canine ASD.
