Summary

Oral contraceptives may improve voice stability in women. This study found lower jitter and shimmer in women taking oral contraceptives compared to those who do not, suggesting increased voice quality.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Endocrinology
  • Speech Science

Background:

  • Previous research on sex hormones and voice quality primarily focused on menopause and the menstrual cycle.
  • The impact of oral contraceptives on the female voice remains largely unexplored in scientific literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of oral contraceptives on key acoustic parameters of the female voice.
  • To compare voice stability and acoustic measures between women using oral contraceptives and a control group.

Main Methods:

  • Acoustic analysis of sustained vowels /i/ and /a/ from recordings of 10 women over 40 days.
  • Comparison of voice parameters including fundamental frequency (F0), amplitude, jitter, shimmer, and harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR) between the oral contraceptive group and the natural group.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Women using oral contraceptives (pill group) exhibited significantly lower jitter and shimmer values compared to the natural group.
  • No significant differences were observed in F0, amplitude, or HNR between the two groups.
  • The pill group demonstrated significantly smaller variance across all tested acoustic variables, indicating increased voice stability.

Conclusions:

  • Oral contraceptives may enhance voice stability, potentially due to minimized hormonal fluctuations.
  • This study provides initial evidence suggesting a link between oral contraceptive use and improved voice quality parameters in women.
