We separated different shapes of carbon cluster anions using ion mobility before analyzing them with photoelectron spectroscopy. This new method allows for isomer-resolved studies of gas-phase ions.

Area of Science:

  • Physical Chemistry
  • Spectroscopy
  • Mass Spectrometry

Background:

  • Isomers of gas-phase ions can have distinct properties.
  • Separating ion isomers prior to spectroscopic analysis is challenging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and demonstrate a method for isomer-resolved spectroscopy of gas-phase ions.
  • To apply this method to carbon cluster anions.

Main Methods:

  • Ion mobility separation coupled with mass spectrometry.
  • Photoelectron spectroscopy for isomer characterization.

Main Results:

  • Successfully separated ring and chain isomers of carbon cluster anions (10-12 atoms).
  • Obtained isomer-resolved photoelectron spectra.

Related Experiment Videos

Conclusions:

  • Ion mobility techniques enable isomer separation for subsequent spectroscopy.
  • This methodology is applicable to various ion spectroscopies, such as IR photodissociation.
