Background:

Ambulatory mastectomy is a politically debated topic lacking clinical data analysis.
Patient satisfaction surveys informed the development of an optimized surgical experience.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of an ambulatory mastectomy protocol.
To compare same-day discharge with traditional overnight stays for mastectomy patients.

Main Methods:

A novel algorithm was implemented focusing on reduced nausea, enhanced preoperative education, and minimized narcotic use.
Patients were offered a choice between overnight hospitalization or home discharge with visiting nurse support.

Main Results:

92 procedures were performed on 87 patients; only one opted for overnight stay.
Over 97% of patients were discharged within 2.5 hours post-surgery.
Perioperative complications decreased by 80%, and hospital charges dropped by 79.5% compared to the previous year.

Conclusions:

Ambulatory mastectomy, when meticulously planned, can significantly lower healthcare expenditures.
This approach achieves reduced costs without increasing patient morbidity or mortality.
Clinical data supports the viability of same-day discharge for mastectomy patients, countering public reservations.
