Effect of processing variables on texture development in a mica-based glass-ceramic.

Summary

This study aimed to determine if mica-based glass-ceramics could be heat-pressed using dental equipment and how pressing conditions affect crystal alignment. The researchers melted the glass, cast it into rods, and pressed it under different conditions. They used SEM to examine the microstructure and measured crack lengths after Vickers indentation. The results showed that pressing induced crystal alignment, with the degree of texture varying between 35 ± 6 and 79 ± 6. The alignment was linearly related to the aspect ratio of mica platelets. Crack lengths decreased in the direction perpendicular to pressing and increased in the pressing direction. The authors concluded that pressing is feasible and that texture development can be controlled through processing variables.
