Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Autoimmune neutropenia is a condition characterized by low neutrophil counts due to an autoimmune attack.
  • The clinical manifestations of MS are diverse, but autoimmune neutropenia has not been previously associated with MS.

Observation:

  • A 53-year-old Japanese male patient with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis presented with persistent neutropenia.
  • Neutrophil counts remained critically low (<0.2 x 10(9)/l) regardless of MS disease activity or treatments like immunosuppressants or granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF).

Findings:

  • The patient's neutrophil count showed transient improvement following high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy.
