Summary

A web-based tutorial and a traditional lecture were equally effective in teaching pharmacy students metered-dose inhaler (MDI) technique. Both methods significantly improved MDI knowledge and assessment skills compared to a control group.

Background:

  • Effective metered-dose inhaler (MDI) technique is crucial for optimal asthma and COPD management.
  • Traditional lecture-based education may not be the most effective method for teaching psychomotor skills like MDI use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of a web-based tutorial versus a traditional lecture in enhancing pharmacy students' knowledge and assessment skills of MDI technique.

  • Third-year PharmD students (n=42) were randomized into web-based tutorial, lecture, or control groups.
  • Knowledge and technique assessment skills were evaluated using pre- and post-tests and observation of a standardized mock patient.
