Summary

This study compared polyethylene and alumina liners in uncemented total hip arthroplasty. Both liner types demonstrated excellent 5-year outcomes with no revisions or aseptic loosening, suggesting comparable efficacy for hip replacement.

Background:

  • Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common procedure for hip joint degeneration.
  • The choice of acetabular liner material impacts long-term implant survival and patient outcomes.
  • Polyethylene and ceramic (alumina) liners are widely used in THA, each with potential advantages and disadvantages.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of uncemented total hip arthroplasty using polyethylene versus alumina acetabular liners.
  • To evaluate implant survivorship and the incidence of aseptic loosening at a minimum 5-year follow-up.

  • A matched-pair study design involving sixty consecutive patients (60 hips).
  • Patients were matched for age, gender, body mass index, activity level, and bone stock.
