Area of Science:

  • Medical Statistics
  • Clinical Research Methodology

Background:

  • Statistical method application varies across medical specialties.
  • Understanding common statistical tests is crucial for interpreting medical literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To catalog statistical methods used in Family Practice, Emergency Medicine, and Obstetrics & Gynecology journals.
  • To identify the most frequently used statistical tests in these fields.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative articles from six medical journals (Jan 1998-Dec 2000) were reviewed.
  • Case reports and editorials were excluded from the analysis.
  • A total of 1828 articles were analyzed for statistical test usage.

Main Results:

  • Pearson's chi-square/Fisher's Exact test (47.5%) and Student's t-test (33.1%) were the most common statistical methods.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of variance (23.3%), linear regression (17.6%), and logistic regression (17.4%) were also frequently used.
  • Familiarity with these core methods allows interpretation of at least 70% of the literature.
  • Conclusions:

    • A strong grasp of basic statistical tests is sufficient for interpreting the majority of published medical research.
    • Educational initiatives should prioritize teaching fundamental statistical concepts and appropriate study design.
