Estrogen therapy for prostate cancer significantly lowers protein S (PS) levels, similar to congenital PS deficiency. This decrease may contribute to cardiovascular complications in treated patients.

Summary:

  • Prostate cancer patients treated with oral diethylstilbestrol diphosphate (DESdP) showed significantly lower antithrombin III and protein S (PS) levels compared to untreated patients or those receiving LH-RH agonist therapy alone.
  • PS levels were markedly reduced in estrogen-treated patients, with 82% falling below the normal lower limit.
