[Arizonae subspecies Salmonella enterica urinary infection with confusional syndrome]

Infections due to subspecies arizonae Salmonella enterica are rare. These infections are transmitted by reptiles. We report the case of S. arizonae urinary tract infection that occurred in an immunocompetent woman.

An 82 year-old woman was admitted for confusion. A urinary tract infection due to Salmonella arizonae was diagnosed. No neurological, iatrogenic or metabolic cause could explain the confusion. Treatment with ciprofloxacin was given. The confusion and the infectious syndrome disappeared.

The prevalence of infections is probably underestimated because the digestive problems they generate are usually benign.
