Summary

Polypoid cystitis in dogs involves bladder inflammation and mass formation without cancer. Surgical removal of polyps proved most effective, though their preneoplastic potential requires further study.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Canine Urology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Polypoid cystitis is a rare canine urinary bladder disease.
  • Characterized by inflammation, epithelial proliferation, and polypoid masses.
  • Lacks histopathologic evidence of neoplasia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review clinical and laboratory features of canine polypoid cystitis.
  • To assess treatment outcomes for affected dogs.
  • To investigate potential preneoplastic nature of polyps.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records from 17 dogs with polypoid cystitis.
  • Analysis of clinical signs, laboratory findings, and diagnostic imaging.
  • Evaluation of treatment strategies and patient outcomes.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Most affected dogs were female (15/17) presenting with hematuria or recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Proteus spp. was the most common bacterial isolate.
  • Polyps were often cranioventrally located; surgery was the most effective treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical polyp removal is the most efficacious treatment for canine polypoid cystitis.
  • The relationship between UTIs and polyp formation remains unclear.
  • Further research is needed to determine if polyps are preneoplastic lesions.
