[The patient classification system. I. The allocation of nursing personnel]

A classification system can be an essential management tool of nursing administrative practice. This system should exist to provide nursing with useful and meaningful information for decisions about staffing allocations, monitoring productivity, and costing of nursing services. The purpose of this study is to show the importance of a patient classification system, after a review of current literature, in the hope that a research agenda on the topic can be established in Brasil.
