Summary

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy resulted in fewer complications and shorter hospital stays compared to open cholecystectomy. Patients undergoing the laparoscopic procedure also required significantly less postoperative pain medication.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Innovation
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures

Background:

  • Gallstone disease management often involves cholecystectomy.
  • Open cholecystectomy has been the traditional approach.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy offers a minimally invasive alternative.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare elective open cholecystectomy versus laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • To evaluate differences in operating time, morbidity, mortality, hospital stay, and analgesic use.
  • To assess the clinical outcomes of two distinct cholecystectomy techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 80 patients (40 open, 40 laparoscopic).
  • Patients matched for age and body mass index.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data collected on operative details, complications, hospital stay, and pain management.
  • Main Results:

    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy had a longer median operating time (90 min vs. 45 min).
    • Lower overall complication rate in the laparoscopic group (10% vs. 22.5%).
    • Shorter median hospital stay (2 days vs. 5 days) and reduced analgesic requirements for laparoscopic procedures.

    Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is associated with improved outcomes.
    • This includes fewer complications, reduced hospital length of stay, and less need for postoperative pain relief.
    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy represents a favorable surgical option for gallstone disease.
