Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology

Background:

  • Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is a significant concern for women's reproductive health.
  • The relationship between infertility and spontaneous abortion requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of spontaneous abortion in women with unexplained secondary infertility.
  • To define the association between infertility and spontaneous abortion.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluation of obstetrical histories of 43 women diagnosed with unexplained secondary infertility.
  • Analysis of 88 pregnancies to determine spontaneous abortion rates and live birth outcomes.

Main Results:

  • A high rate of spontaneous abortion (44%) was observed in the studied pregnancies.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Women with unexplained secondary infertility experienced a threefold increase in spontaneous abortions compared to the general population.
  • A 50% reduction in live birth rates was noted in this cohort.
  • Conclusions:

    • A significant association exists between infertility and spontaneous abortion.
    • Infertile couples exhibit a higher frequency of spontaneous abortions.
    • Women with recurrent spontaneous abortions have a higher prevalence of infertility.
